Wahab (1989) werd geboren en groeide op in Garu, Noordoost-Ghana. Toen Wahab twaalf jaar oud was, stierf zijn vader. Met zijn moeder, broertje en zusje trok hij in bij het gezin van een oom, die verpleegkundige was. Zijn moeder verhandelde kleine waren op de lokale markt.
Zowel op de basisschool als de “junior secondary school” slaagde Wahab als beste van zijn jaargenoten. Op de “senior secondary school” was hij één van de tien best geslaagden van circa honderd schoolgenoten.
Na de middelbare school vertrok hij naar Accra, de hoofdstad, om een baan te zoeken. Na enkele dagen gewerkt te hebben in een wasserij besloot hij nog eens deel te nemen aan de staatsexamens om zijn eindexamenresultaten te verbeteren. Op basis van zijn cijfers kwam hij in aanmerking voor een universitaire vervolgopleiding.
Zijn leven lang koesterde Wahab één droom: arts worden. “It’s a passion. I will feel very excited to be part of a profession that makes a huge contribution to the health and wellbeing of members of society.” Hij had veel ambitie, zo schreef hij: “Overcoming challenges is really rewarding to me and I know I would have to do this so many times throughout the course. I think I should be given a chance because I really want to help people, especially those in the rural areas.”
Maar Wahab en zijn familie waren niet in staat om een vervolgopleiding te bekostigen. Wahab beschreef zijn situatie als volgt:
I may have begun life without much to run with,
but I have genuine aspiration to ignite my future.
I want my life to be more than just existence.
I want to be relevant to many people,
especially those in the northern part of my country,
and make a tremendous impact on the lives of people.
I don’t know how or why,
but meeting you I had the feeling that another door of happiness had just opened for me.
I was much attracted to your desire to read anything that comes your way.
Even though I did not see you reading books, I saw you carrying a lot of them and you must be reading them.
From this, I also started reading small books till I came across the book that has changed my mentality completely.
‘Think Big’ is the title of the book and it’s written by Dr Ben Carson.
From this story, I learned the following principles.
1. We do not determine how we enter into life.
2. All of us do not start at the same level in life.
3. We can make every place a starting point for a better life.
4. Little alteration we make in our habits and choices can cause a great difference.
5. God will always bring us the opportunities at the time we need them.
Lastly it is a strong desire of mine to do something great for the honour and glory of God.

Elders staat beschreven hoe Stichting “Professor Gbas” besloot om een geneeskundestudie te bekostigen voor Wahab (zie hier). Naar aanleiding van dit besluit, stuurde hij het volgende bericht:
To all the people who contributed to make the Professor Gbas Foundation a reality I say a BIG thank you. I really appreciate your help for people coming from a pitiful background like me and I pray that it continues. I promise to cooperate with the foundation to the end. I feld an overwhelming sense of gratitude and humility for the opportunity to study in the university. Thank you once again.

In augustus 2012 werd Wahab toegelaten tot de studie geneeskunde aan de University of Cape Coast in Zuid-Ghana. Hij doorliep zijn zes studiejaren succesvol. In 2018 rondde hij zijn studie af en werd hij dokter. Zijn levensdroom kwam uit!
Wahab komt uit het Garu-Tempane District, waar geen artsen werkzaam zijn. In de omliggende regio is slechts een schaars aantal artsen in de steden aanwezig. Deze situatie is kenmerkend voor Noordoost-Ghana, waar men vooral is aangewezen op traditionele geneeskundige ‘hulp’. (Zie hier.) Het is Wahabs ambitie als arts terug te keren naar zijn regio van herkomst en daar te kunnen bijdragen aan een oplossing voor het tekort aan gezondheidszorgpersoneel.
